Aegirine (also known as Acmite) is a sodium iron silicate mineral with a hardness of 6. Its crystal system is monoclinic and it forms in columnar, prismatic crystals, which are sometimes striated with pointed terminations. It is dark in color, often black, greenish black or brownish black. It occurs most commonly in alkali-rich volcanic rocks. It is found in Greenland, Russia, Canada, South Africa and the United States.
