Marcasite is an iron sulfide mineral with a hardness of 6 to 6.5. It is chemically identical to Pyrite, but it is lighter in color. Its crystal growth habits are different, and it decomposes more easily. Its color is brassy yellow to silverfish yellow and it crystallizes in a variety of forms, including pyramidal and tabular. Marcasite is found widely, in many different countries. The ‘Marcasite’ gems set in antique-style jewelry are actually Pyrite, because true Marcasite powders too easily to be cut for gems.
