Description
Proustite is a Silver sulfosalt mineral with a hardness of 2 to 2.5. Its crystal system is hexagonal (trigonal). It can form in crystals which are prismatic, rhombohedral or scalenohedral, as well as in massive and compact habits. Its color is deep scarlet red, which may account for its old name, Ruby Silver. Proustite is a late-stage mineral found in low-temperature hydrothermal veins, often in association with other Silver minerals, Calcite and Galena. In has been found in various Silver mining locations, and particularly good specimens have come from Germany.
