Description
Scapolite is a complex mineral containing sodium, calcium, silicon, aluminium, oxygen, chlorine, carbon and sulphur. Its crystal system is tetragonal and its hardness is 5 to 6. It can form in prismatic crystals as well as columnar and massive habits. Scapolite’s range of colors includes white, gray, light green, blue, yellowish, and reddish. It is common in regional metamorphic rocks like amphibolites and gneises. Gem-grade Scapolite has been mined in Sri Lanka and Myanmar. A significant quantity of cabochon-grade Blue Scapolite has been found at Mont Saint-Hilaire, in Quebec, Canada.
