Description

Sphene (also known as Titanite) is a calcium titanium silicate mineral with a hardness of 5 to 5.5. Its crustal system is monoclinic. It typically forms in flattened, wedge-shaped crystals, but it can also occur in lamellar or granular habits. It is found in both igneous and metamorphic rocks. In the large deposit discovered on the Kola Peninsula of Russia, the Sphene occurred in association with Apatite and Nepheline. Sphene has also been found in the European Alps, as well as Madagascar and the USA.
