Description

Spider Jasper is a member of the Quartz family, a silicon dioxide mineral with a hardness of 7. Its crystal system is hexagonal (trigonal). Spider Jasper occurs only in massive habit and does not form crystals. It is a bi-colored stone, displaying a black background filled with a n intricate swirling pattern of red-orange lines of varying thickness. Mineralogists suggest that the original black material must have had multiple fractures which were later filled in with red. The name Spider Jasper is derived from the resemblance of the red-orange lattice to the pattern of spider web. Spider Jasper is found only in Idaho, in the USA.
