Axinite is a borosilicate or complex borate silicate mineral with a hardness of 6.5 to 7. Its color is usually brown, although blue and violet specimens have also been found. Its crystal system is triclinic. Its name is derived from the similarity of its sharp-edged, wedge-shaped crystals to the form of an ax. Axinite occurs often within veins and cavities in granite. It is found in France, Mexico, Russia and the USA.
