Description
Rubellite, also known as red tourmaline, is a beryllium aluminium silicate with a hardness of 7 to 8. Its crystal system is hexagonal (trigonal). It forms in prismatic crystals with vertical striations along the sides. It alos occurs in compact or massive habits. Rubellite’s name is derived from the similarity of its color to that of ruby, although most rubellites are more pink than red. Rubellite is found primarily in Brazil, but good specimens have also come from Africa, as well as California and maine.
