Description
Sphalerite is a zinc sulfide mineral with a hardness of 3.5 to 4. Its crystal system is tetrahedral and dodecahedral. Sphalerite also occurs in massive, concretionary, granular and botryoidal forms. Its color ranges widely, including shades of red, black, brown, yellow, green, gray, white, and sometimes colorless. Some Sphalerite crystals are transparent enough to be faceted into gems, through the stone’s perfect cleavage makes it difficult to cut. Sphalerite is found in cuttable quality in Spain and Mexico. Less grades are found in many countries.
